SMCA Students Places at Lee County History Fair

The National History Fair is a national contest that begins at the school level. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics' significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries. These products are entered into competitions in the spring at local, state and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

At Six Mile Charter Academy all 8th grade students participated in the History Fair. They were given the choice to write an historical paper or create an exhibit board. The historical paper is a research paper of 5 pages in length (2500 words) with strict criteria of format and an annotated bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The exhibit board is a more creative way for the students to display their research using visuals and a 500 word maximum explaining their research.

All projects were entered in a school level fair during school hours in which teachers and staff members viewed and evaluated the display boards. The faculty and staff evaluators completed a questionnaire and the results determined which students would move to the next level and compete in the evening school fair. All student historical papers were read and evaluated by a committee of teachers. The high scoring papers moved on to the evening fair as well. During our evening fair outside judges were invited to assist us in determining which projects would move on to the Lee County Fair. It was determined that SMCA had 8 students compete in the Lee County Fair – 6 exhibit boards and 2 historical papers.

We are very proud to announce that, out of 12 contestants for the historical paper, Maya Pujlos-Garcia placed 3rd! She embraced this project from the very beginning, always commenting how much she was enjoying it and how much she was learning. Her topic was "The Revolution of the Internet" and her enthusiasm for this topic was conveyed in her interviews with the judges.

Miracle Brings Positive Message
to SMCA Middle School

Our Six Mile Charter Academy middle school students received a message about discipline, goals, and reading from Mr. Reggie Williams, infielder for the Fort Myers Miracle baseball team.

SMCA is proud to engage our community and invest in our students to bring motivational and educational messages to inspire students to set and achieve their goals. Go Wildcats!

Six Mile Charter Student Leaders and
Parents Tour Florida Capital

Student leaders and parents from Six Mile Charter Academy toured the state capital and met with state leaders as part of their training and experience on the Student Government for 2011-12.  The school looks forward to annually providing exposure and access to our state capital and to our state leadership to experience this responsibility of leading and advocating for issues important to each student as citizens and participants in their government.  Our SMCA students proudly discussed local issues with state leaders and represented their school, families, and community with great honor.
